The secondary education institute IES ICHASAGUA is pleased to announce the launch of a new Italian language program, called DANTE, designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn one of the most beautiful and culturally rich languages in the world. Along with Cabrera Pinto in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, IES ICHASAGUA is the first high school to offer an Italian language learning program to students in the Canary Islands.
The DANTE program, which began in September of this school year, is aimed at students in their 1st and 4th years of secondary education (ESO). It includes interactive courses that combine theoretical lessons with practical activities. During the 2024-2025 academic year, the subject of Geography and History is being taught in Italian, along with a specific course on the Italian language, led by Professor Nira García Rojas. For the next academic year, the school’s director, Don José Ramón Mejías De Haro, plans to increase the number of subjects taught in Italian.
Students will have the opportunity to explore Italian culture through history and geography, language and literature, music, and gastronomy, turning learning into an immersive and stimulating experience.
"Italian is a gateway to an extraordinary culture," says the Geography and History teacher in Italian, Don Igor De Simone. "We want to encourage our students not only to learn the language but also to understand and appreciate Italian history and traditions."
In these first two months, several activities have been carried out, including a music festival at the school with students performing songs in Italian, research on notable Italian figures such as Marco Polo, and preparations are already underway for celebrations like Dantedì (March 25) and April 25 (Liberation Day).
The program also envisions cultural exchanges and collaborations with Italian schools in the future, offering students an authentic and direct experience.
We encourage both Italian speakers and those unfamiliar with the language to enroll next year, helping to spread Italian language and culture in the Canary Islands and Spain!
