In February and March, animation lovers have an unmissable event in Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

Filmoteca Canaria and Tenerife Noir are joining forces to present a tribute to Ralph Bakshi, one of the most controversial and innovative figures in animation history.

The "Ralph Bakshi: Urban Noir" series will feature five of his most iconic films, screened every Tuesday at the Teatro Guiniguada in Gran Canaria and every Thursday at Espacio La Granja in Tenerife, always at 7:00 PM.

Who is Ralph Bakshi?

Bakshi is a name that revolutionized the animation industry. His unique style and uncompromising approach proved that animation isn't just for children.

Tackling complex themes such as racism, violence, sexuality, and counterculture, his films shocked audiences and opened new creative possibilities for the genre.

Bakshi’s work blends raw realism with sharp satire, creating a distinctive visual language that has become his trademark.

This film series celebrates his bold creativity and his ability to push the boundaries of animated cinema, giving audiences the chance to discover (or rediscover) his work.

Screening Schedule

The series kicks off on February 11 and 13 with Fritz the Cat, an adaptation of the famous Robert Crumb comic strip.

Set in the 1970s, this film captures the rebellion and disillusionment of an entire generation.

The following week, on February 18 and 20, it’s the turn of Heavy Traffic, a deeply personal film that mixes surrealism and urban realism to depict life in New York City.

In March, the program becomes even more intense.

  • On March 3 and 6, Coonskin will be screened, a provocative and fiercely satirical film about racism in the United States, which still sparks debate today.
  • On March 18 and 20, audiences will experience American Pop, an emotional and nostalgic journey through American music history.
  • Finally, the series will conclude on March 25 and 27 with Cool World, a film that blends animation and live-action into a surreal, sensual, and chaotic story.

All screenings will be presented in their original language with Spanish subtitles, allowing viewers to enjoy Bakshi’s works in their most authentic form.

This film series is a rare opportunity to explore the work of an artist who forever changed animation, offering a unique and thought-provoking cinematic experience.

Don’t miss it!
